DISH SPENDS $1.56 BILLION FOR ADDITIONAL SPECTRUM

March 5, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

DISH Network, the satellite TV service, has won all 176 license for H block spectrum for $1.56 billion. American H Block Wireless LLC was listed as the winning bidder, a name that DISH was using for its bidding. The New York license alone went for $216.96 million, while the Los Angeles license fetched $166.81 million. DISH’s Charles Ergen has not officially announced what he plans to do with those licenses — or with numerous others that he has begun accumulating — but he has suggested that they could be employed as a kind of extension to the satellite service, providing mobile video to subscribers and building additional wi-fi hotspots. Others have suggested that he may attempt to launch a 4G wireless network and attempt to bundle that with DISH’s satellite service, putting him on a more equal footing with cable-TV operators.
