HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE FIRES UP HOME VIDEO SALES

The second Hunger Games movie, Catching Fire, lived up to its name in its first weekend of release on home video. Lionsgate said on Tuesday that it sold an estimated 3.9 million DVD and Blu-ray discs in its debut weekend, slightly above the original’s 3.8 million. More significantly sales for digital copies of the movie soared 40 percent above the first film, according to the studio, which did not specify how many copies had been downloaded. While studios rarely translate the number of units sold to dollars and cents, Lionsgate nevertheless disclosed that the film generated $65 milion in home entertainment revenue. “This is a monster opening and a tremendous result for the second film in a franchise, underscoring the enormous momentum of The Hunger Games films,” said Ron Schwartz, Lionsgate’s president of home entertainment sales.
