Just three weeks after he unveiled Fox TV’s fall schedule during the network’s upfront presentation to advertisers, Kevin Reilly has resigned as chairman of entertainment for the slumping network. In an interview with today’s (Thursday) Los Angeles Times, Reilly said his heart was no longer in the job. “I’ve been doing this for 11 years, at Fox and NBC … and over the last 12 months I started looking at the broader entertainment landscape. … It just felt like it was time,” he told the newspaper. The network is coming off a singularly bad season during which most of its new shows flopped and old standard-bearers such as American Idol, Glee, and The X-Factor saw their audiences dwindle. “As your [viewership] goes down it gets harder to program and launch other new shows,” Reilly told the Times. He said that he will be “cheering from the sidelines” if any of the new shows he developed for the coming season become hits.
