In 2012 the average cable bill rose 5.1 percent, while the rate of inflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index rose 1.6 percent, according to an FCC report. The rates were pushed up by increasing costs for programming, including retransmission consent fees, the study indicated. The study found that the average monthly price for expanded basic service on cable was $64.41. Satellite service was slightly less — $63.99 for DirecTV and $59.99 for DISH. DirecTV provided 211 channels for its extended basic package versus 160 channels for cable. DISH offered fewer than 150 channels.
