CHINA’S BOX OFFICE CONTINUES TO EXPAND

The Chinese box office (excluding Hong Kong) has already passed 10 billion yuan ($1.61 billion) and is projected to take in 28 billion yuan ($4.49 billion) by the end of the year, according to China’s State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SARF) and reported by the Xinhua news service. The government agency said that domestic films accounted for 56 percent of that amount, with the hit film The Monkey King grabbing $167 million of the total. Captain America: The Winter Soldier was the second most popular film of the year, earning $115 million. China has been rapidly expanding the number of theaters throughout the country and is currently the second-largest film market after the United States, with a total box office near 22 billion yuan ($3.53 billion) in 2013.
