IMAX claimed on Tuesday that “dozens” of its theaters internationally screening Godzilla set individual ticket-sales records, helping it to produce the highest-grossing IMAX opening of 2014. The film earned $21.2 million in 539 IMAX theaters, the company said, or approximately $39,000 per theater. In a statement, Greg Foster, Senior Executive Vice President, IMAX Corp and CEO of IMAX Entertainment, said, “The cornerstone of our portfolio strategy is finding those movies where people say, ‘if you haven’t seen it in IMAX than you haven’t really experienced it.’ Godzilla is clearly one of those films.” The company reported setting theater records in Taiwan, Austria, Germany, New Zealand and the U.K. It is due to open in China, the world’s second largest movie market, on June 13.
