Netflix continues to consume more bandwidth than any other Internet operator — in fact, it now accounts for an average of 34.2 percent of all downstream traffic between 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m., according to a study by Internet marketers Sandvine. That figure compares with an average of 31.6 percent for the second half of 2013. By comparison, Amazon Instant Video, which competes with Netflix in the online video world, accounts for kidy 1.9 percent of downstream traffic. Until fairly recently YouTube had been the heaviest consumer of broadband traffic. But it dropped to 13.2 percent of peak usage in primetime this year, down from 18.6 percent recorded in the second half of 2013. It remained the favorite on mobile platforms however, followed by Facebook.
