CHINA ORDERS TWO U.K. BANKS TO DROP ADS IN H.K. NEWSPAPER

In a worrisome development for media entrepreneurs in China, two major British banks have reportedly yanked their advertising from Apple Daily, one of Hong Kong’s biggest newspapers, which has been editorially critical of China’s government. Anson Chan, who has held high-ranking office in Hong Kong under the British colonial administration and is now advocating for news media freedoms, described the banks’ advertising pullouts as the first step down a very slippery slope. The New York Times observed today (Thursday) that the crackdown comes amid increasing apprehension in Hong Kong about the encroaching influence of mainland China in its economic and political affairs, and a surge in attacks against journalists.
