GAME OF THRONES FINALE SETS PIRACY RECORD

The blood-drenched season finale of HBO’s Game of Thrones attracted 7.1 million viewers on Sunday or 9.3 million when repeat airings on the same night are taken into account. The figure does not include people who watched the show on subsequent airlines Sunday night. Nor, of course, does it include the number of people who watched it on TV networks abroad. TorrentFreak.com, which follows BitTorrent usage reported that the episode set a "mind-boggling" piracy record. "Never before have so many people gathered to share a single file on the Internet," it said, "254,114 people share one single torrent at the same time." Twelve hours after the episode aired, it had been downloaded 1.5 million times. The satirical website TheOnion.com quickly posted a headline reading: "Shocking ‘Game of Thrones’ Finale Concludes with Arrest of 5 Million Viewers for Piracy." The spoof article went on: "That part right at the end when the FBI kicked in my door and told me to get on the ground? I did not see that coming at all,’ Boston resident Peter Herzfeld said of the surprise season-ending turn, which left millions of die-hard fans of the fantasy series in a state of astonishment and disbelief as they were handcuffed by federal law enforcement officials and charged with violating intellectual property law by using BitTorrent and similar file-sharing services."
