AFTER SAYING IT WASN’T A CABLE SYSTEM, AEREO NOW SAYS IT IS

There is a "Plan B," after all it seems. After insisting all along that there wasn’t any alternative but to call it quits if the Supreme Court ruled against the Aereo service, which plucks broadcast signals from the air and relays them to subscribers via the Internet, Aereo has now asked the court to treat it as a cable system, thereby giving it status to apply for compulsory copyright licenses. Under the law, cable companies are required to carry the signals of local TV stations in their area. They then pay the stations a retransmission-consent fee to do so. FilmOn, a similar streaming service, has indicated that it is also seeking to be classified as a cable system. The broadcast networks quickly responded, stating that it was "astonishing for Aereo to contend that the Supreme Court’s decision automatically transferred Aereo into a cable system."
