INDIE LOW-BUDGET FILM OPENS AT NO. 1 IN CHINA

Transformers: Age of Extinction, far and away the biggest hit ever on the Chinese mainland, took a back seat to two locally produced movies over the weekend. Tiny Times 3 opened with $51.8 million, outpacing last year’s Tiny Times 2 , which debuted with $48 million. The 3D horror flick The House that Never Dies came in at No. 2 with $25.8 million, just ahead of Transformers 4 with $25 million. That brought the total Chinese gross for the latest installment in the Transformers franchise to $285 million. It is likely to end its run on the mainland this week with a total haul of more than $300 million. Homemade films are certain to continue to dominate the Chinese market through most of next month, a period that authorities set aside to protect local filmmakers from Hollywood behemoths.
