July 8, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

The owners of the nation’s leading theater chains and the owners of the movie studios that keep them supplied had little to celebrate on the 4th of July. According to Studio System News, the top 12 films grossed $120.6 million this weekend versus $221.6 million over the same weekend in 2013 — a 45.6 percent drop. The No. 1 film this weekend was Paramount’s Transformers: Age of Extinction, which plummeted to $37.1 million from more than $100 million a week ago — a 63-percent drop. Warner’s Tammy was the runner-up, opening with a disappointing $21.6 million. By contrast, Universal’s Despicable Me 2 led the box office a year ago with $83.5 million, followed by Disney’s the Lone Ranger with $29.2 million. Box-office revenue for the year is down 8.6 percent from the same period in 2013.
