HOCKEY SETS NEW RATINGS RECORDS

The audience for professional hockey continues to grow. After setting ratings records last season, the NHL’s opening night doubleheader on the NBC Sports Network (NBCSN), set a new record on Wednesday. The first game, between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Boston Bruins, delivered 956,000 viewers, the most ever to watch an opening-night game on cable. It was also the most ever to watch any regular-season game on NBCSN. and was up 12 percent over last year’s season opener, which set the previous ratings record. The audience peaked in the 8:00 p.m. quarter-hour with 1.21 million viewers. The second game of the double header, between the San Jose Sharks and the Los Angeles Kings, which did not begin until after 10:00 p.m. and ended at 1:14 a.m., nevertheless averaged 44,000 viewers and set a record for a late game.
