It looks as if it will be another quiet weekend at the box office, with analysts saying that only one film has a chance of opening with more than $20 million. That film is Universal’s horror flick Ouija, which tracking reports indicate will earn between $20 million and $25 million. Fandango said on Thursday that Ouija is leading all other movies for the weekend in pre-sales. (Universal forecasts that it will earn a more modest $18 million.) Anything close to that amount would represent a huge success for the negatively reviewed movie, which cost only around $5 million to produce. Universal has been marketing it with some offbeat promotions, including a screening and séance at Hollywood Forever cemetery. Lionsgate’s positively reviewed John Wick, starring Keanu Reeves, and the second week of Fury, starring Brad Pitt, are expected to battle it out for the runner-up spot, with analysts predicting $15-20 million for each. Meanwhile, The Weinstein Company will be expanding St. Vincent, starring Bill Murray, wide this weekend. It had been playing in limited release for the past two weeks. The critically acclaimed film is expected to haul in $7-10 million this weekend.
