The hosts of Comcast’s business channel CNBC may pontificate on American corporate affairs, but when it comes to overseas matters … well, a segment of Monday’s Squawk Box has proved to be an embarrassment. In today’s (Tuesday) edition, Britain’s Guardian newspaper describes the segment in which Martin Shanahan, head of Ireland’s foreign development agency, corrected Squawk Box host Joe Kernen, when, during a discussion of the falling euro, he remarked, "You have pounds in Ireland, anyway." Shanahan replied, "No, we have euros." Kernan: "Why have euros in Ireland?" Shanahan: "Why wouldn’t we have euros in Ireland?" Kernan: "What about Scotland — aren’t you very close?" Shanahan: "In the north of Ireland they have [pounds] sterling, but we have euros." "Kernan: "They do?" Shanahan: "Yes." Kernan: "Oh, my God, you guys ought to get it together."
