Football represented the decided factor in Sunday night’s ratings — boosting the audience for shows following game coverage, depressing the audience for shows airing opposite it. On Fox, the overrun of the afternoon NFL telecast at 7:00 p.m. was watched by 15.7 million viewers and lifted the audience for The Simpsons, which followed, by 45 percent from last week when Fox did not air NFL coverage. NBC’s Sunday Night Football clobbered the competition on the other networks. While the game between the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers averaged 15.4 million viewers, peaking in the 9:00 p.m. half-hour with 19.3 million, CBS’s once-unbeatable CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, saw its numbers fall to a series low, just 8.5 million viewers.
